The full process

Step 1: Booking and payment

If you decide to go ahead, you’ll make payment and schedule your appointment. Appointments are usually scheduled within the next 10-14 days. The assessment costs £990 and includes:

  • your pre-assessment questionnaires
  • QbCheck
  • your clinical assessment with a consultant psychiatrist
  • your full written report
  • support with next steps, regardless of the outcome

It does not include medication, prescribing or ongoing treatment. If medication or other treatment is required, this is priced separately. Visit our Pricing page for further information, cancellation and rescheduling terms.

You don’t need a GP referral to book.

Step 2: Questionnaires before your appointment

We’ll send you a set of secure online forms to complete at home. They give your consultant a full picture before you meet. This means your online assessment appointment time is spent on what matters most.

They usually cover:

  • your current difficulties and how they affect work, study, home life and relationships
  • your childhood, development and school years
  • your physical and mental health history, and any medication you take
  • standardised rating scales used in ADHD assessment

We’ll also ask, if possible, for a short questionnaire from someone who knew you as a child, such as a parent or older sibling. ADHD starts in childhood, so their view helps. If nobody is available, tell us. It won’t stop your assessment going ahead.

Supporting documents, such as school reports are useful too, if you have them. They’re helpful but not essential.

Allow about at 45 minutes for each of the forms.

You can save and come back to them.

Step 3: QbCheck

QbCheck is a computer-based test that measures three things linked to ADHD: attention, impulsivity and physical activity. It takes about 15–20 minutes.

You respond to shapes on a screen while your laptop or computer camera tracks your movement. The results are compared with people of the same age and sex who don’t have ADHD.

A QbCheck gives your consultant objective data alongside everything else. It does not diagnose ADHD on its own. The diagnosis always comes from your consultant’s clinical judgement.

You will complete the QbCheck at home and will need access to a computer or laptop with a camera. More information on the QbCheck can be found here. [link to QbCheck page].

Step 4: Your clinical assessment

Your assessment is with a consultant psychiatrist and lasts 60-90 minutes. It takes place online by video call through our secure platform.

Your consultant will:

  • talk through your questionnaire answers and QbCheck results with you
  • use a structured diagnostic interview, to look at your experiences in childhood and adulthood
  • explore how your difficulties show up across different parts of your life
  • consider other explanations, such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems or past trauma, which can look similar to ADHD
  • check your diagnosis against recognised criteria

You can ask questions at any point. You’re welcome to have someone with you for support.

Step 5: Your written report

You’ll receive your report within about 2-3 working days of your assessment.

It sets out:

  • the outcome: whether you meet the criteria for ADHD, and which presentation
  • how your consultant reached that conclusion
  • any other conditions or factors they identified
  • recommendations for next steps, including support at work or in education

Your report is yours. You can share it with your GP, employer, university or school.

After your assessment

If you’re diagnosed with ADHD

Your report will recommend next steps. These might include medication, ADHD coaching, therapy, or adjustments at work or in education. Read more about support beyond medication. [link]

Please read this before you book if NHS-funded care matters to you:

  • Assessment UK does not currently hold a shared care agreement with NHS GPs.
  • We are not yet accredited under Right to Choose.
  • Your GP decides whether to prescribe or continue care following a private diagnosis. This depends on their practice’s own policy.

We recommend speaking to your GP practice before your assessment, so you know their position in advance.

If ADHD isn’t confirmed

That’s still a useful answer. Your consultant will explain what the assessment did show, and what might better explain your difficulties. Your report will suggest where to go next.
