Dr Mitchell qualified as a doctor in South Africa before training in psychiatry in Hampshire, where he also gained an endorsement in substance misuse and trained in a range of psychotherapy approaches. He completed his specialist training in 2011 and has since worked as a consultant general adult psychiatrist in the NHS, as well as in private practice in both the UK and South Africa. He has also held several leadership and management roles.
He has a particular interest in assessing neurodivergent conditions, including ADHD in women and more complex presentations where neurodivergence and mental health overlap.
Dr Mitchell believes that while he brings the clinical expertise, his patients are the experts in their own lives. Every assessment starts by listening. He looks at the whole picture, including physical health, lifestyle and the pressures of modern life, and turns it into a clear, practical plan for what comes next.
Colleagues describe him as calm, approachable and easy to talk to - and we all agree!
Dr Mitchell is the expert in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, but the patient is the expert in their own life.
Getting that balance right, and recognising that every patient's situation is different, is central to how he works.
